Poplin is a closely woven 1/1 plain-weave fabric with a smooth face and a fine crosswise rib or rib-like appearance. Traditional construction uses finer warp yarns and a slightly coarser weft, while many commercial qualities create the effect mainly through higher warp density. Modern poplin is woven in cotton, polyester-cotton, cotton-rich blends and stretch constructions. The term describes fabric construction and character, not a fixed fiber composition, weight or performance level.

- Evaluate easy-care fabric after repeated laundering because initial smoothness does not demonstrate long-term crease recovery, seam appearance or strength retention.

- Buying by the name poplin alone is risky because mills may use it for plain-weave constructions with different yarn counts, densities and weights.
- Assuming all poplin has a visible crosswise rib can cause rejection because many commercial qualities rely mainly on higher warp density rather than a strongly differentiated weft yarn.
- Specifying total thread count without separate EPI and PPI values hides construction balance and makes supplier quotations difficult to compare.
