Four-way stretch is not a complete performance description. Buyers should compare directional stretch, recovery, residual elongation, GSM, construction, usable width, and finishing under a documented test method so that development samples and bulk fabric are evaluated on the same basis.
Start with a comparable specification sheet
A fabric described as four-way stretch may extend in both principal directions, but that label does not define how far it stretches or how well it returns. For sourcing decisions, the specification should separate extensibility from recovery and should identify the direction in which each value was measured.
- Record stretch separately in the wale/course, warp/weft, or length/width directions as applicable to the construction.
- State the test extension, load or force, conditioning conditions, and recovery time instead of listing a single stretch percentage.
- Compare residual elongation after recovery, not only the initial extension.
- Specify fabric weight in GSM, usable width, construction, fibre content, and finishing route on the same basis for every sample.
- Ask suppliers to identify whether compacting, heat-setting, brushing, coating, or laundering has been applied before testing.
Distinguish stretch from recovery
Stretch indicates available movement. Recovery indicates how the fabric behaves after that movement, which affects knee bags, seat growth, waistband return, garment shape, and repeat wear. Two fabrics can have similar stretch readings but different residual elongation because their yarn structure, elastane content, knitting or weaving parameters, and finishing differ.
A buyer should ask the mill or converter to state the complete test setup. This includes specimen direction, specimen size, conditioning, extension level, loading rate, hold time, unloading procedure, recovery interval, and number of cycles. If an internal garment requirement is being used, document that requirement rather than assuming a fabric test translates directly to finished-garment performance.
- Stretch percentage: the increase in length at a defined extension or force, reported separately by direction.
- Recovery percentage: the proportion of the original dimension regained after a defined recovery period.
- Residual elongation: the dimensional change remaining after recovery; this is often more useful for assessing bagging and fit stability.
- Recovery time: the interval between removing the load and taking the final measurement.
- Cycle performance: whether the requirement applies after one extension or after repeated loading and unloading.
Specify direction and fabric construction
Direction is a practical sourcing issue. A fabric may provide useful extension in both directions while still showing a large difference between lengthwise and crosswise recovery. Pattern placement, seam orientation, and garment fit can expose that difference during production or wear.
The comparison should also include construction details such as fibre content, yarn type where relevant, knit or weave structure, elastane placement, fabric width, and GSM. Weight should be compared after the same agreed conditioning and finishing basis. A higher or lower GSM is not automatically better; it changes hand, opacity, drape, cover, sewing behaviour, and the amount of force required to extend the fabric.
- For knitted fabrics, compare course and wale directions and note whether the fabric has been relaxed before measurement.
- For woven stretch fabrics, record warp and weft results and identify which direction will run across the garment body.
- For cut-and-sew products, map the required stretch direction to the pattern and grainline rather than relying on the term four-way stretch.
- Check whether the fabric twists, spirals, or changes width during extension, since percentage alone does not describe these effects.
Treat finishing as part of the performance specification
Finishing can alter dimensions, handle, surface friction, and the balance between stretch and recovery. A lab dip or development sample may not represent bulk fabric if the process route, stenter settings, relaxation time, or finishing sequence changes. The purchase specification should therefore identify the approved finish and the tolerances for GSM, width, stretch, recovery, and residual growth.
For garments with close fit or repeated movement, a small fabric panel or prototype test can complement flat-fabric measurements. Document the pattern, seam construction, wash or care cycle, extension points, and assessment criteria so that supplier and buyer are reviewing the same evidence.
- Ask for greige and finished specifications when finishing is expected to change width, GSM, hand, or recovery.
- Document the finishing route, including heat-setting, compacting, calendaring, brushing, coating, washing, or other surface treatments.
- Confirm finished usable width and tolerances, not only nominal width.
- Request production-lot samples when the decision depends on recovery, because finishing conditions can affect the final result.
- Agree which properties will be checked during bulk inspection and which will be verified on the finished garment.
Questions to put in the sourcing file
Before comparing offers, ask each supplier to complete the same specification template and attach the relevant test records or sample references. If a supplier reports only a general four-way stretch percentage, ask for the directional values and recovery protocol before treating the fabric as comparable.
It is also useful to record the intended end use, fit level, seam allowance, and care route. These details help determine whether the required performance is being judged at fabric level, garment level, or both.
- Approved sample or standard for appearance, hand, colour, width, GSM, and stretch direction.
- Minimum or target stretch by direction, with the measurement method stated.
- Maximum residual elongation after the agreed recovery period and cycle count.
- Tolerance for GSM and usable width after finishing.
- Care condition or laundering sequence used for any garment-level validation.
