Polyester vs Nylon Taffeta: Practical RFQ Fields for Linings, Bags and Lightweight Shells

Polyester and nylon taffeta should be sourced through comparable RFQ fields covering GSM, yarn construction, usable width, finishing, coating, end-use tests, sewing performance, and bulk controls. Fiber content is only one part of the decision.

Start with a comparable fabric specification

Polyester and nylon taffeta should be compared against the same intended use and a complete fabric construction. A 70 GSM polyester taffeta and a 70 GSM nylon taffeta may behave differently because of yarn size, thread density, heat setting, calendering, coating, and finishing.

An RFQ should separate greige construction from finished fabric requirements. This helps suppliers identify whether a requested hand feel, opacity, water resistance, or downproof performance comes from the base cloth, mechanical finishing, or an applied chemistry.

  • End use: garment lining, internal bag lining, pocketing, luggage compartment, or lightweight shell.
  • Fiber content: 100 percent polyester, 100 percent nylon, or a declared blend. Request the specific nylon type if it matters to processing or compliance.
  • Finished weight in GSM, with an agreed tolerance. GSM should be considered alongside yarn denier and construction rather than used as the only basis for comparison.
  • Yarn and construction: filament type, warp and weft denier, thread density, plain weave construction, and whether textured or flat yarns are used.
  • Usable width: state the cuttable width, not only the overall loom or finished width, and include the width tolerance needed for marker planning or lamination.

Where polyester and nylon differ

Nylon is often considered where tear strength, flex resistance, and abrasion performance are priorities at a low fabric weight. Its higher moisture uptake can affect conditioning, dimensional behavior, coating consistency, and color assessment.

Polyester is commonly specified for cost-sensitive linings, promotional bags, internal compartments, and applications where moisture management during storage or processing needs to be straightforward. Nylon may be preferred for performance bags and lightweight shells, but the fiber name alone does not establish durability. Suppliers should be asked to submit construction details and test data for the exact finished article offered.

  • Polyester generally has lower moisture uptake and can offer useful dimensional stability for everyday garment and bag linings. Actual hand, static behavior, seam performance, and abrasion resistance still depend on yarn,
  • weave, and finish.

Match evaluation points to the application

The same taffeta should not be approved for a garment body lining, backpack interior, and lightweight shell without application-specific checks. Cutting direction, seam type, needle size, stitch density, and contact with hook-and-loop fasteners can change the practical result.

  • For garment linings, document hand feel, glide over other layers, opacity, seam slippage, snagging, static control, wash or dry-clean compatibility, and colorfastness requirements.
  • For bags, document abrasion, tear strength, tensile strength, seam strength, puncture risk, coating adhesion, and color transfer concerns. State whether the fabric will contact light-colored goods or coated components.
  • For lightweight shells, document air permeability, hydrostatic resistance if relevant, spray resistance, coating or membrane compatibility, breathability requirements, seam-tape compatibility, and any calendered or ciré
  • surface needed for wind resistance or fiber containment.
  • For quilted or insulated articles, state whether downproof or fiberproof performance is required. Define the test method and acceptance level rather than relying on the words downproof or leakproof.

RFQ fields that reduce mismatched offers

A practical RFQ should state whether results must come from the supplier's internal laboratory or an agreed third-party laboratory. It should also clarify whether testing applies to pre-production yardage, bulk production, or both.

Include roll length, roll weight limits, packing method, inspection standard, defect allowance, shade grouping, sampling requirement, order quantity, delivery terms, and required production lead time. Chemical restrictions, restricted substances requirements, and market-specific documentation should be listed separately from physical performance claims.

  • Finish type: heat set, calendered, ciré
  • , anti-static, softener, water-repellent, flame-retardant, or other specified treatment.
  • Coating or backing: PU, acrylic, or other chemistry; coating side; target performance; appearance; and whether the stated GSM includes the coating.
  • Color: color standard, light source for approval, lab dip or strike-off process, lot-to-lot shade control, and colorfastness test methods.
  • Performance: required test methods and acceptance limits for tear, tensile, abrasion, seam slippage, dimensional change, rubbing, washing, perspiration, water resistance, or air permeability, as applicable. Avoid asking

Sample approval and bulk control

A hand sample is useful for screening, but it does not replace representative yardage or production testing. Before approval, confirm that the sample uses the same yarn source, dyeing route, finish, coating, and production equipment proposed for bulk supply.

For community discussion, document the three RFQ fields that most often expose a meaningful difference between polyester and nylon taffeta in your own lining, bag, or shell program.

  • Compare samples only after conditioning them under the same agreed conditions.
  • Record actual GSM, usable width, thickness, hand, noise, opacity, surface friction, and visual appearance for every submission.
  • Check both face and back because coating, calendering, and dye penetration can make side identification important in cutting and sewing.
  • Run sewing trials with the intended needle, thread, seam type, and number of plies. Note puckering, needle damage, seam slippage, fraying, and coating marks.
