Before sampling microfiber fabric, compare filament-level data, finished construction, brushing details, absorbency methods and end-use performance under a common specification. A consistent supplier checklist makes swatches easier to evaluate and reduces decisions based only on handfeel or a generic fiber label.
Begin with the end use and an agreed specification
Microfiber is a broad commercial description rather than a complete fabric specification. Two fabrics sold under the same name can differ in polymer, filament size, splitting, construction, brushing and finish. Before requesting samples, give the supplier an end-use brief and a comparison sheet with the same fields for every candidate.
This first step helps prevent a soft handfeel or attractive surface from becoming the main selection criterion when the finished product needs a different performance balance.
- State the intended product, such as cleaning cloth, towel, upholstery, lining, sportswear or filtration media.
- Define the required fabric form, usable width, target GSM, color route and whether the material will be supplied greige, piece dyed, yarn dyed or printed.
- List the performance priorities in order. These may include water pickup, wiping efficiency, drying time, softness, low lint, abrasion resistance, dimensional stability or colorfastness.
- Separate mandatory requirements from preferences so the supplier can identify construction conflicts before sending samples.
Check the filament specification, not only the fiber label
Ask the supplier to identify the microfiber at filament level. A generic label such as 80 percent polyester and 20 percent polyamide does not explain filament fineness, cross-section or whether the components form a splittable structure.
Record the supplier's terminology exactly and confirm units. Denier per filament should not be confused with total yarn denier. If a supplier cannot disclose a proprietary yarn construction, request enough comparable information to assess fineness, blend, splitting route and expected performance.
- Polymer composition, including the percentage of polyester, polyamide or other components.
- Filament specification in denier per filament, or dtex per filament if that is the supplier's normal reporting unit.
- Whether the yarn is split, splittable, conjugate or non-split, and the cross-section used where relevant.
- Yarn count, filament count, texturing method and whether the stated values refer to the feed yarn or the finished yarn after splitting.
- For splittable yarns, the splitting stage and how the supplier monitors splitting consistency during processing.
Compare construction on a finished-fabric basis
Construction controls more than appearance. It influences bulk, stretch, liquid transport, linting, snagging and dimensional behavior. Suppliers should therefore provide more than a style name such as suede microfiber, coral fleece or warp-knit microfiber.
Request a construction description linked to the finished fabric. When comparing alternatives, keep GSM and thickness separate. Similar GSM values can result from different densities, pile heights and finishing routes.
- Knitted, woven or nonwoven construction, followed by the specific structure used.
- Course and wale density for knits, or ends and picks for woven fabrics, using agreed measurement units.
- Yarn specification by face, back, warp, weft or pile position where different yarns are used.
- Finished GSM, usable width and thickness, together with the allowed tolerances.
- Whether GSM and width are stated before or after dyeing, heat setting, brushing and other finishing steps.
Document brushing and surface finishing
The word brushed does not describe the full surface treatment. Ask which mechanical processes are used and in what sequence. The number of brushing passes may be useful for process control, but it should not replace an agreed surface standard because machine settings and equipment differ among mills.
Photographs can help identify obvious differences, but they are not sufficient for judging pile direction, drag, softness or loose fiber. Note the intended fabric face and mark it consistently on all submitted swatches.
- Whether one side or both sides are brushed.
- The stage at which brushing occurs and whether raising, sueding, shearing or polishing is also used.
- The intended face and back, especially when the two sides have different pile or wiping behavior.
- Target pile height, surface appearance and handfeel standard, supported by an approved reference swatch when the project advances.
- Controls for loose fiber, lint, streaks, barre, pressure marks and shade change caused by surface finishing.
Define absorbency with a repeatable method
Absorbency can refer to several different behaviors: how quickly the surface wets, how much liquid the fabric picks up, how much it retains, or how effectively it removes liquid from another surface. Specify which behavior matters for the intended product.
A supplier's internal method can be informative, but results are only comparable when conditioning, specimen preparation, washing and test steps are aligned. For cleaning applications, include practical wiping observations alongside liquid pickup. Surface interaction, construction and finish can affect wiping even when two fabrics show similar water uptake.
- Condition samples under the same agreed environment before comparison.
- Use the same specimen size, water type, liquid volume, contact time and drainage time.
- Record initial pickup, retained liquid after drainage, wetting speed and spread area as separate observations when they matter to the application.
- Repeat the comparison after an agreed wash sequence if the product will be laundered.
- Confirm whether absorbency depends on a temporary finish and ask whether any softener, hydrophilic agent or other treatment is applied.
