For Oxford fabric, compare construction details separately: denier, weave, GSM, backing, coating, waterproofing method and usable width. Ask suppliers to define test methods and tolerances, then document the approved sample and production controls in the RFQ.
Start with a complete construction definition
Oxford fabric is used as a broad commercial description, so the name alone does not establish yarn size, weave, weight or performance. An RFQ should describe the construction that the buyer needs and require the supplier to confirm each element.
Denier, weave and GSM answer different questions. Denier describes yarn linear density, weave describes how the yarns are interlaced, and GSM describes finished fabric mass per square meter. A heavier denier does not automatically establish a higher GSM or a particular level of abrasion resistance.
- Define the fabric by construction and performance, not only by the word Oxford.
- State the required denier for warp and weft, such as 300D, 600D or another agreed specification. Confirm whether the denier refers to the yarn before or after processing and whether it applies to both directions.
- Ask for the weave description and construction details. A supplier should identify the warp and weft arrangement, yarn type, and any stated thread density or fabric count rather than relying on an informal product name.
- Request finished GSM with an agreed tolerance. GSM can change with coating, backing, finishing and moisture, so record whether the figure is for greige fabric or finished fabric.
- Separate backing from coating in the RFQ. Specify whether the reverse side has a laminated layer, a surface coating, or both; identify the material, color, target thickness if relevant, and which side is the face of the6
Make usable width measurable
Width is often quoted as a single number, while production depends on the area that can actually be cut. The RFQ should distinguish total finished width from usable width and explain how the usable measurement is taken.
For a repeat order, retain the approved sample or a signed specification showing the measurement points. Record whether measurements are taken relaxed, under light tension or after conditioning, because the method can affect the reported result.
- Ask whether the face fabric uses polyester, nylon or another fiber, and request the relevant yarn information for warp and weft.
- Request the finished width from selvedge to selvedge and the usable or cuttable width after excluding selvedges, defects, coating irregularities and any unusable edge area.
- State whether the width must be stable after the supplier's normal finishing process. If the fabric will be laminated, printed or sewn, identify which width is used for consumption calculations.
- Ask for a roll-length range, roll marking method and a statement of how short rolls, joins or partial rolls will be identified.
- Document width tolerance separately from GSM tolerance. A nominal width without an agreed tolerance can create cutting and yield differences between lots.
Separate backing, coating and finish
Backing and coating are not interchangeable terms in an RFQ. They can affect handle, tear behavior, sewing performance, printability and water resistance in different ways. The specification should identify the layer and the performance that the layer is expected to provide.
If the end product includes foam, membrane or another laminated layer, describe that component separately. Otherwise, a supplier may quote a fabric with a surface treatment when the product actually requires a bonded construction.
- Name the backing material and its application method, such as lamination or coating, instead of using only the term backed.
- Specify the required coating or backing color, hand feel, adhesion, flexibility and appearance. These characteristics should be checked against an approved reference sample.
- Ask whether the coating is continuous or intentionally patterned, and whether pinholes, skips, bubbles, delamination or edge build-up have defined acceptance limits.
- State the intended use and flexing conditions. A coating suitable for a light bag may not be suitable for repeated folding, abrasion or outdoor exposure.
- Request the supplier's proposed test method for coating adhesion and, where relevant, resistance to hydrolysis, flex cracking or delamination. Do not accept a test value without the method, specimen direction and pass/fて
Define waterproofing instead of accepting a label
Waterproofing and water resistance should be treated as measurable requirements, not as interchangeable sales terms. The RFQ should identify the exposure, test method and finished-product conditions that matter to the application.
A supplier can confirm a fabric result only for the construction and finish tested. Changes in denier, coating weight, backing, color, finishing temperature or lot can affect performance, so the approved specification should cover these variables.
- Use a defined water-performance requirement. State whether the requirement concerns spray rating, hydrostatic pressure, water penetration under a specified method, or resistance after washing and flexing.
- Ask whether the quoted result applies to the fabric before sewing or to a finished article with seams, zippers, eyelets and other openings.
- Request the test standard or internal method, conditioning procedure, number of specimens, fabric direction and acceptance value. A statement such as waterproof is not a complete test specification.
- If seam sealing, tape or a special sewing construction is required, include it in the product specification. Fabric water resistance alone does not make a finished bag, cover or garment waterproof.
- Ask how water performance is monitored between lots and what documentation accompanies shipment. The buyer should define which records are required rather than assuming that a general claim covers every production lot.
Turn the RFQ into an approval record
A useful Oxford fabric RFQ should leave little room for equivalent-sounding substitutions. Attach a specification table with separate fields for denier, weave, GSM, backing, coating, waterproofing method, total width and usable width.
Keep the supplier's offer, technical sheet, approved sample and inspection record together. This gives the buyer a reference when a later shipment appears similar but performs differently in cutting, sewing or use.
- Request a technical data sheet listing fiber composition, yarn denier by direction, weave or construction, finished GSM, total width, usable width, finish and coating or backing details.
- Ask for a pre-production sample or lab dip where color and finish matter, followed by a production sample for approval before full cutting or shipment.
- Record the inspection method for appearance, width, GSM, coating defects, shade variation, roll length and visible weaving faults.
- Set out the approved tolerances and the process for handling nonconforming rolls. The RFQ should identify whether replacement, credit, sorting or buyer approval is required.
- Confirm packing, roll direction, roll identification and lot traceability so that test records and production rolls can be matched.
